Chapter Thirty-Four

MAX SPED DOWN THE 14 freeway to Palmdale and took the exit too fast, skidding at the bottom of the ramp. He pulled it together and slowed enough to take the corner without flipping over, although his tires squealed. It was late, not much traffic and thankfully no cops. He accelerated again and headed to Argus’s house.

Maybe he shouldn’t have left Gretchen to fend for herself. Then again, he did get absolute confirmation that Argus was an alien. It was worth it. It was. He turned down City Ranch Road, slowing when he was close to the turnoff. He shut off his headlights and crept up the long driveway, guided only by the bluish glow of the cloud overhead. There didn’t seem to be any lights on in the house, although it was hard to see for sure with the surrounding ten-foot brick walls.

Rather than park in plain view, he pulled off the road into the scrub and walked silently to the gate, listening for any sounds. Other than crickets and a coyote or two howling in the distance, he didn’t hear anything. His tough act was worthless at this point, he was pretty damn scared. If Argus was back inside the house, he’d know that he’d been shot at. That wouldn’t sit well with a short-tempered alien.

He touched the butt of his .45 Glock pistol. Only one shot fired, twelve left. He’d made sure to load a full magazine of thirteen, just in case he needed it. Now he was glad he had the extra bullets.

Like before, he clambered up the wall, but this time, at the top there was a coil of razor wire. So, he’d been found out. The house was in darkness, but they didn’t count on him being a trained AURA agent. He reached into his jacket pocket and took out a hard plastic case with an assortment of burglary tools inside and unhooked a pair of wire snips and a small penlight. It was hard to get through the razor wire, but after a couple of minutes, he’d snipped out a section large enough for him to crawl through. After putting his tool case away, he dropped down on the other side. Stealthily he crept across the lawn to the front door and tried the knob. It was unlocked. Careless of them to leave without securing the house, then again, they probably felt safe with the addition of the razor wire. Big mistake, alien morons.

He sucked in a deep breath. “Get a grip, Max,” he whispered. As quietly as he could, he turned the knob and pushed the door open, unholstered his pistol and called out, “Hello?” No answer. “Argus?” Still no answer, or any sound at all for that matter.

Did that mean Argus didn’t go home after all? So where did he go? And where was Gretchen? No time to worry about that now. He stepped into the house and aimed the penlight into every corner and around every bend. Sweat trailed down his face and his back, and his armpits were drenched.
